Is turf a sensible answer for a new-build yard that is currently mud?
It can be an excellent one, particularly with young children or dogs. New Ridgefield lots have compacted subgrade that sheds water, so the bare yard turns to mud each winter. Will the builder’s grading work for a turf base?
Rarely without adjustment. Builder grading is normally set to shed water off the building and satisfy an inspection, not to create a level, well-drained surface for a lawn. Expect the grading to be reworked as part of the base build.
Can we do turf in the back and sod in the front?
A very common and sensible split. The back yard takes the traffic, the dogs and often the shade; the front is usually sunnier and more visible, and frequently governed by HOA expectations. Doing both at once means the site work and access are paid for once.
How long does a Ridgefield turf installation take?
Usually two to four days once we start, assuming reasonable access — excavate, build and compact the base, then lay, seam, pin and infill. Where drainage has to be corrected first, that adds to the front of the programme rather than the turf work itself.
