Vancouver has exactly the conditions artificial turf was made for: small back yards, mature trees casting deep shade, and dogs. In a 400 square foot yard under a big Douglas fir, no grass variety is going to succeed, and every year spent trying costs more than the turf would have.
Dog owners are our biggest turf clients in Vancouver. The base is what makes a pet installation work — an open-graded rock base that lets urine flush straight through, and an infill that resists odor rather than sand that holds it. Installed that way, a dog run stays usable and doesn’t smell.
Narrow side yards are the other frequent job. The strip between a Vancouver house and the fence is permanently shaded, permanently damp and permanently muddy. Turf, or turf combined with stepping stones in river rock, ends that for good.

Does artificial turf count toward impervious surface limits?
It is worth asking rather than assuming, and the answer depends on the system and the jurisdiction. A properly built turf installation drains vertically through an open-graded base, which is a genuinely different situation from a concrete slab. Where coverage is tight on a Vancouver lot, establish the position before you commit to a design.
Is turf the right answer for a small shaded east Vancouver yard?
Frequently, yes. On the smaller Cascade Park and Fisher’s Landing lots, a lawn that gets little sun, heavy foot traffic and no chance to recover is a losing proposition. Turf gives a usable green surface year round in a space too small for grass to survive being used.
We have dogs and a small yard. Does turf hold up?
It is one of the strongest cases for it. A small yard with dogs becomes mud from November to April, and turf over a free-draining base solves that. Odour control comes down to drainage quality and an appropriate infill, plus rinsing the favoured spots.
Can turf be installed where there is no machine access?
Yes, though it costs more. The base is the heavy part, and on the tighter Vancouver lots it often comes in by barrow through a side gate. That labour has to be in the price honestly, which is why we look at access before quoting.
Will turf work under the mature trees in the older neighbourhoods?
It handles the shade far better than grass does, but it needs more upkeep under a canopy — leaves and needles must be cleared before they mat down and feed moss on the surface. We also work around significant roots rather than cutting through them for base depth.
Can turf and a paver patio be combined in a small yard?
It is often the best use of a compact space — a paved area for furniture and a turf area for children or dogs, with a clean detailed edge between them. That junction is where installations look either finished or homemade, so it is worth doing properly.
What happens to the old lawn?
It gets excavated and hauled away, and on a small lot that volume is a bigger part of the job than people expect. Turf cannot be laid over existing grass — it needs a compacted, free-draining base, which means the old surface comes out first.
Is turf a good idea if the yard already floods?
Only once the drainage is sorted. Turf and its base drain quickly, but if the ground underneath cannot take water away you have built a very well-drained surface on top of a bathtub. On east Vancouver lots that flood, the drainage design comes first.
