Battle Ground lots, particularly outside the city limits, give us room to work. Patios here are frequently larger, and more often connected to something else — an outdoor kitchen, a fire pit area, a path out to a shop or barn.

Does a patio on an acreage property need a different approach?
The build is the same but the context is not. On acreage the patio usually has to relate to a much bigger space, so it needs edges and structure to feel deliberate rather than a rectangle dropped in a field. Access is normally excellent, which helps both the schedule and the price.
Does the extra wind out here affect a patio?
Not the paving itself, but very much how usable the space is. An exposed patio on an open north-county lot can be uncomfortable for a large part of the year. Siting it with some shelter, or building screening and planting into the design, matters more here than in a sheltered Vancouver back yard.
Can you get material to a patio at the back of a large property?
Usually yes, and it is one of the advantages of working out here — room to bring a machine in, somewhere to stack material and space to turn. The limiting factor is soft ground in winter rather than access width, which is worth thinking about when scheduling.
Is a patio worth it if the yard drains badly?
Only once the drainage is dealt with. Plenty of Battle Ground subdivision lots have drainage designed to satisfy an inspection rather than to serve a garden, and a patio built on ground that stays saturated will move. Drainage is under the patio, so it goes first.
Can a patio tie into a gravel drive or parking area?
Yes, and on rural properties that transition is worth designing rather than leaving to chance. A defined edge between loose gravel and a paved surface stops the gravel migrating across the patio, which is otherwise a permanent nuisance.
Do the in-town subdivision lots here behave like Ridgefield?
Very much so — compacted builder subgrade, thin topsoil and minimal drainage. The build we specify for a patio in a newer Battle Ground development is essentially what we would specify off Pioneer Street in Ridgefield, for the same reasons.
Do we deal with the city or the county for a patio here?
