Can a patio be built on a steep Camas back yard?
Yes, but it is a retaining project with a patio on top rather than a paving job. Creating a level area on falling ground means cut, fill, a wall to hold the grade and drainage behind it. That is why a Camas hillside patio costs considerably more than the same square footage on flat ground.
What happens if you hit basalt during the excavation?
It slows everything down — what would be a quick dig elsewhere can need a hammer attachment. Should the patio be one level or terraced?

Where does the water go on a hillside patio?
It has to be designed, not assumed. Water arrives from the slope above as well as falling on the patio itself, so the surface pitch, the drainage behind any wall and the route out all work as one system. A hillside patio with good paving and poor drainage will move within a few seasons.
Can machinery reach a patio site on a steep lot?
Sometimes, and where it cannot the cost changes substantially, because base material has to be moved by hand. Slope, gate access and the route the machine would have to take all decide it. We look at that specifically on Camas walkthroughs because it is the biggest single price variable.
